The Internet works by using IP addressing. Domain Name Service (DNS) is the process that converts names into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. If you receive a message indicating a server can not be found, the problem
may be a DNS problem.
If you get a message "server not found", when you attempt to send or receive email:
- Verify your computer is connected to the Internet (i.e.: a valid modem connection).
- Determine if you can send and receive email.
- Attempt to access websites (i.e.: http://www.excell.net/ or http://www.cnn.com/ ).
If your computer is connected, but you can not send or receive email, or access any websites, you should check your DNS settings:
- Double click "My Computer" on your desktop.
- Double click "Dial-up Networking" inside the window that pops up from step 1.
- Single click the connection you use to connect to the Internet. Usually Excell.Net will be a part of it's name.
- Single click on "File"on the tool bar at the top of the "Dial-up Networking" window.
- Drag the mouse pointer to the "Properties" option under "File" selected in step 4.
- Single click the "Server Types" folder.
- Verify only "TCP/IP" is checked under "Allowed network protocols".
- Verify click on "TCP/IP Settings".
- Verify "Server assigned IP address" is selected in the TCP/IP Settings.
- Verify "Specify name server addresses" is selected in the TCP/IP Settings.
- Verify "204.117.214.10" is specified as the "Primary DNS".
- Verify "199.2.252.10" is specified as the "Secondary DNS".
- Verify "Use IP header_compression" is checked in the TCP/IP Settings.
- Verify "Use default gateway on remote networks" is checked in the TCP/IP Settings.
